Cole Brooks - Baseball
Cole Brooks (Bay City, Mich./John Glenn HS) was recognized as the GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week following his stellar performance at the plate, where he finished with a .587 batting average.
Brooks also added five home runs and 18 RBI to his stat line over the week long slate of games. The freshman outfielder connected for three home runs and 10 RBI against the Dragons on Monday, and drilled two more over the weekend at Hillsdale, including a three-run shot in the first inning that put SVSU ahead early. He also scored 14 runs while reaching base safely with nine extra base hits in seven games played.
In 59 at-bats this season, Brooks holds a team-best .475 batting average while leading SVSU with seven home runs and 25 RBI. He has drawn 14 walks and stolen three bases as well.
SVSU Baseball rolls along with conference play this week as the Cardinals hosts Northwood on Wednesday and Wayne State for a weekend series on Friday and Saturday.
Taylor Stepanski - Track & Field
Taylor Stepanski (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS) qualified for the 2017 NCAA Outdoor National Championships and notched another provisional mark over the weekend as SVSU competed in the Bucknell Bison Classic held in Lewisburg, Pa.
Stepanski secured a trip to the National Championships with a strong performance in the 1,500 meter run. She would finish in fifth place and posted a time of 4:23.37, matching her personal best in the event. In her second and final event of the meet, Taylor added a provisional mark following her first place finish in the 800 meters. She ran the 800 meters in 2:08.63.
The Cardinals will compete next in the GVSU Al Owens Invite taking place on Apr. 21 and 22. The two-day event will be held on GVSU's campus in Allendale, Mich.
