Cardinals remain in first place after split at Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS -- The first-place and No. 23 nationally-ranked SVSU softball team made the trip over to take on Ferris State University on Friday afternoon in a GLIAC doubleheader. The Cardinals recorded a 4-2 victory in the opener before dropping the nightcap for the split on the road. 

Saginaw Valley remains in first place by a game in the GLIAC standings, staying a game clear of three league opponents.

Game One

After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning, the Cardinals responded with four runs in the top of the 4th to take the 4-1 edge.

Aubree Mouthaan knocked-in Meredith Rousse for the first run and Anna Conard had an RBI single that plated Mouthaan for the second. Conard would score on an error and Lauren Bachert later had an RBI single to score Julia Miller to make the score 4-1.

Ferris State added another run in the 6th to make the score 4-2, which is where the final score would stand.

Inside the Boxscore

  • The Cardinals had seven different players account for a hit each for their seven hits.
  • Mouthaan, Bachert and Conard had the RBI for the visitors.
  • Miller and Becky Corbett each had a double in the opening game.
  • Corbett and Bachert each drew a walk as well.

In the Circle

  • Samantha Willman picked up the victory for SVSU, working the complete game while allowing a single earned runs and scattering eight hits. She walked four and had three strikeouts.

Game Two

The Bulldogs held the advantage throughout the nightcap, scoring seven runs in the third and eight in the fourth to account for their runs. 

SVSU got a run in the third with a Courtney Reeves home run and two more in the 4th. In the 4th inning, Reeves added another RBI double and Bachert posted an RBI single. 

Ferris State would close-out the game in five innings, 15-3.

Inside the Boxscore

  • Bachert had two hits with an RBI.
  • Reeves had the home run and a double.
  • Bachert added the other extra-base hit for SVSU.

In the Circle

  • Conard took the loss in the circle, working 1.1 innings of relief. She allowed five runs on five hits.

Saginaw Valley resumes play on Thursday (Apr. 20), as the Cardinals play a non-conference doubleheader against Lourdes at the SVSU Softball Complex. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm at SVSU. Saturday's regularly-scheduled GLIAC twinbill against GVSU has been pushed back until Sunday, April 30th with a first pitch of noon.
