BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The SVSU swimming & diving program had several student-athletes compete on the opening day of the 2017 NCAA Division II National Championships. This year's event is being hosted at the Birmingham CrossPlex as part of the national championship festival.
The Cardinals got 14 points from a strong finish for the 200 Medley Relay team, placing the team 18th overall through eight events.
- The 200 Medley Relay team, consisting of Amanda Thielen, Lydia Mattar, Alexa Bloom and Melanie Soenksen, advanced to the consolation finals with a 15th place finish of 1:44.28. The squad improved upon that time in the finals race, posting a mark of 1:43.36 to finish in 10th place overall. That garnered the Cardinals 14 points for the championship.
- Soenksen competed in the 50 free as well, finishing tied for 21st place with a time of 23.59 seconds.
- Mattar finished 26th in the 200 IM, recording a time of 2:05.89.
Saginaw Valley will compete on day two of the national championships in Birmingham on Thursday. Mattar and Rebeca Martinez will compete in the 400 IM while the 400 Medley and 200 Free relay teams will also be in action for the Cardinals on day two.
