Lady Cardinals Fall 44-36 to Lake Erie
PAINESVILLE, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team suffered a 44-36 setback on the road to Lake Erie College today (Jan. 21). The Cardinals fall to 3-14 overall on the season with the loss and 1-9 in the GLIAC, while the Storm improve to 12-4 overall and 6-3 in the conference.
Junior Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) garnered Meijer "Player of the Game" honors, finishing the game with eight points on 4-of-7 shooting from the floor. She also pulled down 10 rebounds and blocked four shots on the afternoon.
A jump shot by Morgan Hughes (Pinckney, Mich.) gave SVSU its first lead of the game at 4-2 with 14:32 to play in the half.
Lake Erie then jumped out to a 13-8 advantage before Saginaw Valley closed out the half on an 8-2 run to enter the locker room with a 16-15 advantage.
The Storm would start the second half on a 16-2 run to lead 31-18 with 15:36 to go in the game.
Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) would cap off a 10-1 run by the Cardinals with a lay up to cut the Lake Erie advantage to 32-28 with 10:45 to play. Womack would finish the game with four points and five rebounds.
SVSU would go cold from the field midway through the second half as the Storm built a 44-28 advantage, before Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) hit a jumper with 1:18 to play. Greene would lead the Cardinals with 10 points on the afternoon. The Cardinals would close out the game on an 8-0 run, but it would not be enough as Lake Erie went on to the 44-36 victory.
Saginaw Valley will return to action on Thursday (Jan. 26) when they host Tiffin University at 6:00 PM.
