BAY CITY - A pair of SVSU women's basketball senior student-athletes have been chosen to the All-GLIAC First Team following their performances during the 2016-17 season. Senior forward Emily Wendling and senior guard Katelyn Carriere both earned the first-team honor this season. Carriere was named to the GLIAC All-Defensive Team as well.
Carriere earns first-team plaudits for the first time in her SVSU career, as she was named to the 2015-16 All-GLIAC Second Team. She is second on the team and seventh in the GLIAC in scoring with her 15.3 ppg average. Carriere is third in the league with her 121 free throws and 86.4 free throw percentage as well. Katelyn ranks second in SVSU history in three-pointers (156), fifth in free throws (334) and ninth with 298 assists. She sits just outside the top-10 in career scoring as well, joining the 1,000-point club earlier this season and sitting at a 1,358 current tally.
Wendling followed up her 2015-16 GLIAC Player of the Year and all-american season with another equally as impressive. She ranks second in the GLIAC with her 18.8 ppg and is second with her 89.4 free throw percentage. Wendling leads the league with 143 made free throws and is fifth with her 7.6 rebounds per game. Emily just Tuesday became the program's all-time leading scorer, surpassing the old mark of 1,922 points with her total of 1,931. She ranks No. 1 in made free throws as well (470) and is just 23 rebounds shy of 1,000 for her career (4th). Wendling is currently on-pace to become the single season and career record holder for free throw percentage. This marks Emily's third First Team All-GLIAC honor, going along with another second-team honor and being named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year in her first season.
The Cardinals have advanced to the 2017 GLIAC Tournament Semifinals as the No. 2 overall seed. They face-off against No. 3 seeded Grand Valley State on Saturday (Mar. 4) at 4:00 p.m. The game is set to be played at Kates Gymnasium on the campus of Ashland University.
