ASHLAND, Ohio - The SVSU women's soccer team visited Ashland University to begin a weekend of GLIAC competition in the state of Ohio. The Lady Cardinals held the Eagles scoreless through the first half despite being outshot 9-4 at the break. Ashland would score at the 57th minute and hold back the Lady Cardinals offensive attack to secure a 1-0 win at Ferguson Field on Friday (Oct. 14).

Ashland would begin the match with three shots in the first 15 minutes, with a Deijah Swihart shot rattling off the crossbar and staying out of the goal. The Lady Cardinals would respond back with four shots the remainder of the half. Neither team would get on the board through the opening 45 minutes of play.

The Eagles would break the scoreless tie in the 57th minute off of a free kick. Ashland forward Kelsey McKernan roped a shot 30 yards past goalkeeper Paola de Lanuza for her second goal of the season. Ashland grabbed the 1-0 lead.

Saginaw Valley would gather the ball after the goal and put three consecutive shots on net in the 62nd minute, all of which staying out of Ashland's goal.

The Lady Cardinals then controlled the tempo defensively, only allowing Ashland to record two shots in the second half.

The offense would take over in the remaining 10 minutes as Saginaw Valley failed to convert on a shot from Amanda Minissale in the 86th minute and Valentina Giambanco's shot hit the crossbar two minutes later.
