HOUGHTON, Mich. - Despite a strong overall showing in doubles, the Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell by a score of 5-4 at Michigan Tech today (Oct. 11) in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Cardinals got off to a great start in doubles play, with the team of Izabella Ismailova (Almaty, Kazkhstan / Military College of Sport) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) edging-out their No. 1 doubles opponent, 8-7 (10-8). At No. 2 doubles, Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) came out victorious as well, winning their matchup 8-6.
Doud went on to pick-up her second point of the day in No. 3 singles, defeating her opponent 7-5, 6-0. Grabbing the final point for Saginaw Valley was senior Ashley Giordano (Alpena, Mich. / Alpena HS), who finished the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory.
With the loss, SVSU falls to 3-10 overall and in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech improves to 4-9 overall and in conference play.
The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (Oct. 12) when they face Lake Superior State in Houghon, Mich. for a GLIAC contest set to begin at 10:00 AM.
