HOUGHTON, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team ended its 2013 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) schedule with a 7-2 victory over Lake Superior State University today (Oct. 12).
The Cardinals started off the day with a No. 2 doubles win from the duo of Meghan Woody and Charlotte Wong. Izabella Ismailova and Erin Doud played well in No. 1 singles, but were unable to win in a close match, falling 8-6 to their opponents.
Saginaw Valley played outstanding in singles play, sweeping the Lakers 6-0. Both Wong and fellow senior Ashley Giordano ended their GLIAC careers with victories; Giordano in No. 5 singles 7-5, 6-3, and Wong at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-2.
Doud finished an undefeated weekend at No. 3 singles, taking-down her Laker opponent 6-0, 6-1. Ismailova took No. 1 singles by a 7-5, 6-4 score and freshman Hannah Wittock picked-up a point in No. 6 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Woody also finished the weekend strong with a 6-1,1-6, 7-5 tie-breaker win at No. 2 singles.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-10 overall and in GLIAC while Lake Superior falls to 5-8 overall and in conference play.
Saginaw Valley will return to action Saturday (Oct. 19), when it travels to play Davenport University for a non-conference match set to begin at noon.
