Tennis competes in day one of ITA Regionals

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The SVSU women's tennis team is in Grand Rapids for the weekend, competing in the annual ITA Regionals. The Cardinals had some solid performances to get the weekend rolling on day one of competition.

Shea Donahue opened play in the "A" Singles first round with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Walsh's Victoria Ambrosio. Ana Pico Garcia then notched a solid 6-0, 6-1 win over Michigan Tech's Sandra Cventanovic. 

After Izabella Ismailova fell in a close 7-5, 6-4 match to GVSU's Aimee Moccia, Danielle Slonac claimed a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Illinois-Springfield's Jane Carter.

Donahue, Garcia and Slonac would all bow-out in the Round of 32 after their first round victories while Ismailova claimed an "A" consolation victory by a 6-3, 6-0 count over McKendree's Tori Lindsay.

In "B" Singles play, Taylor McLaughlin posted three victories to advance past the Round of 16, claiming wins over her opponents from Rockhurst (6-1, 6-0), Lewis (6-0, 6-2) and Bellarmine (7-6 (6-2), 6-1).  Abigail Shonk claimed two wins over her opponents from Saint Joseph's (6-0, 6-0) and Indianapolis (2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-0)). She then fell by a 6-1, 6-1 mark to Grand Valley's Nicole Heiniger in the Round of 16. Madeline Miller posted two victories to move past the Round of 16, winning 6-0, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-3 over her Tiffin and Michigan Tech opponents, respectively.

Miller and Mikayla Kazdan claimed an 8-6 win for the Cardinals' only victory on the day in doubles. They defeated their foes from Davis & Elkins College.

The ladies will continue play on Saturday (Sep. 24) in Grand Rapids.
