Women's Tennis cruises to 9-0 victory at LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis squad bounced-back from the toughest portion of the fall 2016 schedule to post a clean 9-0 sweep over the Lake Superior State University Lakers on the road in GLIAC action.

The Cardinals came out of a very back-and-forth doubles slate, taking a 3-0 lead over LSSU heading into singles play. Ana Pico Garcia and Shea Donahue came out on top at no. 1 doubles by a 9-7 count for the first victory. The no. 3 duo of Abigail Shonk and Taylor McLaughlin then made the count 2-0 after registering an 8-5 decision over their opponents. Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac then sealed the doubles sweep after an 8-6 win at no. 2 doubles.

Pico Garcia got the singles competition rolling, cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 victory at no. 2 singles. Slonac sealed the team victory at no. 4 singles, claiming a 6-1, 6-3 decision for the 5-0 lead.

After Donahue notched a 6-4, 6-4 win at no. 3 singles, Ismailova had a stellar match at no. 1 singles against LSSU's Tara Harvey. She took a lead with a 6-3 edge in the first game and was tied up after dropping the second by that same 6-3 count. Izabella then played to a 7-6 victory in a tight third game, posting a 7-5 win in the tiebreaker.

Taylor McLaughlin (6-1, 6-0) and Madeline Miller (6-2, 6-3) then closed-out the match for Saginaw Valley, posting victories at the no. 5 and no. 6 singles spots, respectively.

From Head Coach Jenn Boehm

"We were a little flat as a team coming out of the ITA weekend and it took a lot out of us mentally and physically. I challenged our players to come out with the fire and fight that I know we are capable of and it really showed today. I was especially proud of how we stayed focused and disciplined at the end of our doubles to win all three. We are ready for the next challenge against a very solid Michigan Tech team tomorrow!"
