INDIANAPOLIS– Saginaw Valley volleyball team dropped both matches on the first day of the UIndy Invitational on Friday, Sept. 8. The Cardinals dropped the the first game of the day to tournament hosts Indianapolis, 3-0 and the second game to, Winona State, 3-0.
SVSU moves to 1-5 on the season. Indianapolis improves to 2-3 while Winona State improves to 4-2 overall.
Game One: Indianapolis (L 3-0)
UI was hot coming out of the gate, earning an 3-0 lead to start the match. The Cardinals trailed behind the Greyhounds even with a run to come within two late in the set, finishing 25-21 giving Indianapolis the 1-0 set advantage. The Greyhounds kept the same fast pace game in the second set, only allowing Saginaw Valley to earn back-to-back points one time. Indianapolis pulled out the victory 25-12 and took a 2-0 lead. Greyhounds contiued to start the game on top with a 6-2 lead and eventually took a 6-0 run to end the match 25-14.
Inside the Boxscore
• McKenzie Schuster earned the "Player of the Match" for contributing five kills for SVSU.
• Emily Nieman and Abbie Toland lead the team with nine digs.
• Sarah Tabit recorded eight kills on the match.
• Hannah Tabit contributed 19 assists.
• Lexi Laskowski notched the teams only ace for the Cardinals.

"We weren't able to control the serve well enough again to create the offense that we needed. UIndy served very tough and our ball control suffered. We need to focus on our ball control more and get our offense more involved."
Game Two: Winona State (L 3-0)
Winona State earned the first set victory over Saginaw Valley 25-17 due to there three, three-point-runs while SVSU contributed only one run of two points. With the Warriors up 1-0, WSU took the lead for the entire second set and created a four-point-run in the middle, finishing the set 25-17 and edging out the lead 2-0. With a fairly back and fourth third set, the Warriors powered out a victory in the last five points, 25-17, taking the match 3-0.

• Cardinal defense shined as they out-dug the Warriors 49 to 48.
• Emily Nieman contributed her season high of 26 digs, earning her the "Player of the Match."
• Emily Friesl recorded seven kills, hitting .087.
• Sarah Tabit added on eight kills and six digs.

"We passed serve much better and gave ourselves some very good oppurtunities with our offense. We also served better and that got us in a better defensive positions. Although the score didn't show it like we would like, we played much tougher and put up a better battle against Winona State.
