SVSU Breast Cancer Survivor and Recognition Event

On January 31, 2015, SVSU Athletics hosted the 7th annual "Breast Cancer Survivor Recognition" and reception event.  Survivors received free admission to a reception in their honor and to the basketball game against Ferris State University immediately following.  Survivors were recognized individually, by name at halftime of the women's basketball game and escorted by the SVSU men's basketball players.  This event and its attendees have become familiar faces to the SVSU Athletics Department Family.  Unfortunately, we lost two friends who participated in this event since last year's ceremony.  Les Tyvela, a breast cancer survivor and guest at the event since 2013 who provided the reception invocation, passed away suddenly a few days subsequent to the event due to an unrelated health issue.  Florence "Goody" Peters, a long-time SVSU Athletics supporter and volunteer, lost her battle with the disease and passed in March of 2014.  An endowed scholarship has been established in Florence "Goody" Peters's name for her unrelenting service and civic responsibility.  Student-athletes who demonstrate a commitment to service are eligible to apply for this scholarship.  Contributions to this scholarship can be made here.
