Cardinals Defeat Davenport for First GLIAC Win of 2025

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team earned its first GLIAC victory of the season with a 2–1 win over Davenport on Sunday afternoon at Robert C. Braddock Field.

The Cardinals (3-2-1, 1-1-0 GLIAC) struck first in the ninth minute when Madi Bajis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica HS) scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist from Emily Kolodin (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Grand Blanc HS). SVSU doubled the advantage later in the first half as Sophia Zalucki (Washington Twp., Mich. / Romeo HS) tallied her first career goal in the 33rd minute, set up by Abby Ellis (Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Mott HS).

Davenport pulled one back in the 66th minute, but the Cardinals' back line and goalkeeper Lainey Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS) held firm. Garbarz finished with six saves, including three in each half, to secure the win.

SVSU was outshot 12–9 but finished with three shots on frame, converting twice. Davenport put seven on target, while the Cardinals earned 10 corner kicks to the Panthers' six. The second half intensified with four yellow cards being shown. Saginaw valley finished with 13 fouls while Davenport totaled eight.

Up Next: Saginaw Valley heads on the road for four games before coming back home in mid-October. SVSU starts the road trip at Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday, September 26. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM at Wood Road Soccer Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
