CANTON, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team was victorious Saturday (Sept. 14), defeating Malone University by a score of 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Cardinals played exceptionally well in doubles play, with the team of Izabella Ismailova (Almaty, Kazkhstan/Military College of Sport) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) defeating their opponents 8-4 in No. 1 doubles. Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) also had a successful outing in No. 2 doubles, winning their match 8-2. In No. 3 doubles, it was the team of Ashley Giordano (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS) and new teammate Laurene Majani (Lille, France/Hautes Etudes d'Ingenieur) grabbing the win by a score of 8-1.
Ismailova picked up another victory for Saginaw Valley, winning in No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-2. In No. 4 singles, Wong recorded aother win by a score of 6-0, 6-2. Also dominating in singles play were: Woody in No. 2 singles, Doud in No. 3 singles, and Giordano at No. 5 singles, all taking down their opponents 6-0, 6-0. Hannah Wittock (Flushing, Mich./Flushing HS) also picked up a win for the Cardinals in No. 6 singles, 6-1, 3-6, 1-0.
With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 1-4 overall on the season and in GLIAC play while Malone falls to 0-6 on the season and 0-5 in the conference.
The Cardinals will return to action Sunday (Sept. 15) to face Lake Erie College for a 10:00 am match.
