Tennis Drops Close 5-4 Season Opener at Findlay

FINDLAY, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team traveled to Findlay to face-off with the Oilers in the 2014 season opener.  After falling behind 2-1 after doubles, the Cardinals made a great effort at a comeback but would eventually fall just shy by a score of 5-4.

The Cardinals' lone victory in doubles came from the #3 doubles team of Meghan Woody and Lauren Sharp.  The tandem posted a decisive 8-1 victory over the opponents from Findlay.  The other two doubles matches were extremely close though, as Abigail Shonk and Erin Doud narrowly lost 9-7 at #1 doubles the team of Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac fell by a score of 9-8 in #2 doubles.

SVSU got singles victories at #4 with Woody (6-1, 6-0), #5 with Sharp (6-1, 6-1) and #6 with Shonk (6-0, 6-1).

Doud lost at #2 singles by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.  That meant the score was knotted at 4-4 with Ismailova playing #1 singles.  The 2013 First Team All-GLIAC performer would eventually lose in three sets, taking the first frame 6-2 before falling 6-3 and 6-3 in the final two.

The Cardinals are back in action on Sunday (9/7), as they face Tiffin University in a 10:00 am match.
