Cardinals Fall in Home Opener to Grand Valley, 9-0.

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team was defeated in their home opener against Grand Valley State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match, 9-0.

Saginaw Valley sophomore Izabella Ismailova came close in her No. 1 singles match, but eventually fell to her Laker opponenet by scores of 7-6, 6-4.  Also battling but coming up just short was Meghan Woody in her No. 3 singles match, 7-6, 6-1.  Freshman Lauren Sharp finished her home-court debut with a 6-3, 6-4 loss in No. 6 singles.  The Cardinals came out of doubles trailing 3-0, with the team of Abigail Shonk and Danielle Slonac in No. 3 doubles falling in an 8-1 loss.

"The score did not reflect the level of play in our match," said SVSU Head Coach Jenn Boehm.  "In doubles, we needed to play with more confidence, but in singles we battled in every match.  I know we will have a better result tomorrow."

With the loss, Saginaw Valley falls to 0-3 overall and 0-3 in GLIAC while Grand Valley improves to 3-0 overall on the season and 3-0 in the conference.  The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (9/14) to face Ferris State University in a GLIAC match, set to begin at noon.
