SAGINAW - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team recently paid a visit to a local elementary school to spend some time with students in another community outreach event.

The ladies volunteered to teach tennis to students at Arrowwood Elementary School in Saginaw on Friday, April 15. The school's physical education teacher, Ashley Stelter, invited the Cardinal student-athletes to take over her classes for the morning sessions, allowing the fourth and fifth graders a chance to interact with and learn from collegiate-level athletes about the game of tennis.

Through the use of right-sized racquets and foam tennis balls, the kids were able to be successful even if they had not previously played the sport of tennis. The event ended with a question and answer session, where the kids had the opportunity to ask questions of the team and get an inside feel on what it's like to be a college student-athlete.

"This was a really fun experience for everyone involved," stated SVSU Women's Tennis Head Coach Jenn Boehm. "Our players enjoyed teaching the Arrowwood students some new tennis skills and it was obvious that the kids enjoyed the interaction with college athletes. We definitely plan to do this again next year!"
