Robert Atwater - Men's Track & Field
Robert Atwater (Detroit, Mich. / Lincoln Park HS) provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division II Championships in the high jump during last weekend's GVSU Big Meet. Atwater crossed the bar at a height of 7'0.5" (2.15m) in the high jump to finish in the top spot. The jump is a personal best for Atwater and is now tied for the second best height in the nation. The mark also matched the school record and is first in the GLIAC. He added a fourth place showing in the long jump with a distance of 7.00 meters (22'11.75"). He also ranks fifth in the GLIAC and 28th nationally in the long jump after his performance at the SVSU Classic.
SVSU Track & Field competes at the GLIAC Indoor Championships on February 27 and 28 at the Heminger Center hosted by Tiffin University.
Amanda Thielen - Swimming & Diving
Amanda Thielen (Fenton, Mich. / Hartland HS) posted three solo NCAA B qualifying marks and two in relays during the GLIAC Championships hosted by Wayne State last week.
In the 1,000 yard freestyle, she finished sixth with a NCAA B qualifying mark and new program record of 10:19.00. She recorded a fourth place and NCAA B qualifying time in the 100 yard backstroke at 55.89. Her 200 yard backstroke mark of 1:59.96 earned her second place and was also a NCAA B qualifying time and new program record. Thielen's time of 1:55.24 in the 200 yard freestyle took eleventh place.
Thielen was a part of the 800 yard freestyle relay and the 200 yard medley relay teams that both made NCAA B qualifying times. The 800 yard free relay finished fourth with a time of 7:43.26 and the 200 yard medley relay finished fifth at a mark of 1:46.43. She was also on the 400 yard medley relay, which finished fifth at 3:54.31
