Baseball Defeats Hillsdale, 5-3

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team completed a weekend sweep of Hillsdale College, defeating the Chargers by a score of 5-3 Sunday (Apr. 18).  The win moves the Cardinals to 16-16 overall on the season and 12-10 in the GLIAC while Hillsdale falls to 8-27 overall and 5-19 in league play.

The Cardinals scored a run in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of two, taking a 4-1 lead after two innings.  Hillsdale would put up a single run in the top of the fifth and sixth innings, respectively, to cut the lead to 4-3.  SVSU would plate another run in the bottom of seven, and were able to close-out for the 5-3 victory.

Kyle O'Boyle (Midland, Mich./Bullock Creek HS) had two hits with a double and an RBI, while Matt Hunt (Howell, Mich./Concordia University) had a pair of doubles and an RBI.  Luke McClain (Mt. Morris, Mich.) added two hits in his first start behind the plate this season.  Kevin Dore (Kawkawlin, Mich./Muskegon CC) had a single and two RBIs and Charlie Thomas (Northville, Mich.) and Chase Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) added singles, with Thomas having an RBI.

Colin Coulter (Clio, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) got the win on the mound, working 8.0 innings, scattering seven hits and striking-out eight Chargers.  Justin Drzewicki (Bay City, Mich./Central HS) picked up his second save of the season, working a scoreless ninth in the victory.

SVSU is back in action Wednesday (Apr. 21), as it hosts Ashland University in a 2:00 pm doubleheader.
