ST. LOUIS – Saginaw Valley State University baseball took both games of a doubleheader against Maryville on Saturday to sweep the three-game series. The Cardinals (9-2) defeated the Saints (4-9) 4-3 in seven innings and 5-2 in nine innings.
Game One: Saginaw Valley 4, Maryville 3 (7-innings)
Saginaw Valley wasted no time in the first inning. Ethan Scheib (Mattawan, Mich. / Mattawan HS) walked, and Lucas Mead (Gladwin, Mich. / Gladwin HS) singled to put two on. After a double steal, Buck Snabes (Rochester, Mich. / Rochester Adams HS) ripped an RBI single to right to score Scheib. A throwing error on a pickoff attempt allowed Mead to score, and Connor Cornwell (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Henry Ford II HS) added a sacrifice fly to cap a three-run frame and give SVSU a 3-0 lead. Austin Cicerone (Troy, Mich. / Troy HS) pushed the advantage to 4-0 in the fifth with an RBI single to center, scoring Ryan Jarvis (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS).
Maryville answered in the sixth. A solo home run started the rally, and a pair of RBI plays cut the lead to 4-3. With the bases loaded, the Saints attempted to score on a wild pitch, but Cornwell was able to gather and throw to Dan Wilcome (Sv, 3) (Cheboygan, Mich. / Cheboygan Area HS) at home to end the inning. Wilcome allowed a double to lead off the seventh but retired the next three to earn the save
Jack Sequin (W, 3-0) (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) got the start and went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on five hits and a walk. Sequin struck out five on the way to the win. Snabes finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, while Cicerone added two hits and a run driven in.
Brayden Rebel (L, 1-1) allowed three of the four runs, two of them earned, in the start. He pitched 3.1 innings and stuck out three while allowing four hits.
Game Two: Saginaw Valley 5, Maryville 2
In the nightcap, Chase Raymond (W, 2-1) (Standish, Mich. / Standish Sterling Central HS) delivered a complete-game performance to clinch the sweep, scattering five hits over nine innings in a 5-2 win. Raymond was efficient throughout, allowing just two runs and one walk while striking out eight.
Offensively, Jarvis set the tone with a solo home run to right field in the first inning. He later added an RBI single in the third to extend the lead to 2-0.
After Maryville cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth, the Cardinals capitalized on defensive miscues in the fifth when Scheib reached on an error and Brady Carpenter (Oxford, Mich. / Oxford HS) scored. Saginaw Valley added two more in the sixth on RBI singles from Jacob Pitt (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central HS) and Cornwell to stretch the lead to 5-1.
Jarvis led the offense, going 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Mead added two hits, while Cornwell and Pitt each drove in a run. The Cardinals collected eight hits in the finale and did not commit an error behind Raymond.
Ryan Hoshaw (L, 0-3) pitched five innings in the start for Maryville. He allowed five runs, four earned, on four hits and struck out nine.
