Men's Basketball Falls to Walsh in GLIAC Quarterfinals, 91-85

University Center, Mich. -  The SVSU men's basketball team, the no. 1 seed in the 2016 GLIAC Tournament, hosted the no. 8 seed Walsh University on Tuesday (Mar. 1) at O'Neill Arena. Despite holding a four-point (36-32) halftime advantage, the Cardinals couldn't overcome a 59-point second half surge from the Cavaliers and would drop the quarterfinal matchup, 91-85.

Saginaw Valley got a career-high 31 points from C.J. Turnage, who went 12-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the free throw line in the game. 

The Cavaliers took the lead at the start of the first period after Trey Fletcher posted a jump shot at 19:39 to open scoring.

Caleb Davis gave SV its first lead of the night (3-2), hitting a three at the 18:35 minute mark. Wade Gelhaus later put the Cardinals back in the lead, 5-4, sinking two free throws at 15:19 after Chall Montgomery notched a layup for Walsh. Sterling Johnson tied it up at 7-7 with 14:33 showing on the clock with a jump shot.

The Cavaliers extended their lead up to a period-high of five twice after layups from Fletcher at the 12:50 and 11:41 minute marks.

Walsh led until C.J. Turnage tied it up at 14-14 following a layup and free throw with 8:46 left in the half. Saginaw Valley took the lead at the 8:12 minute mark when Damon Bozeman posted a layup, taking the advantage 16-14. The teams traded the lead and tied six more times before Garrett Hall, Vincent Adams and Turnage each notched a basket in the last two minutes to end the half with the Cardinals ahead 36-32.

At the start of the second half, Jesse Hardin Jr. put Walsh ahead, 37-36 with a jump shot followed by a three-pointer at the 17:37 mark.

Turnage breifly got the lead back for SVSU at 38-37 with the a layup at the 17:22 marker.

The Cavaliers took back the lead and extended it to four (42-38) with 16:13 left on the clock after shots from Fletcher and Hardin.

Johnson got the Cardinals within one point of Walsh, 44-43 with a triple at the 15:03 mark.

Walsh drove its lead up to 10 points with 12:16 left in the game after an eight-point run.

A jump shot from Turnage, followed by a three-point play from Adams, cut the deficit to five at the 9:34 mark.

After the Cavaliers drove their lead back up to 10 (64-54) with 8:16 showing on the clock, Turnage got it back down to five with two layups and two free throws at the 6:03 mark. Adams did the same with a layup and free throw bringing the score to 68-63 at the 5:20.

Hardin made back-to-back threes, taking the Cavaliers to their game-high lead of 11, 74-63, with 4:16 left in the game. Walsh extended the lead to 11 again laterat the 3:46 mark before shots from Hall, Kellen Smith, and Turnage lowered it to three (78-75) with 2:15 left. Walsh took its lead up to 10 (91-81) with 21 seconds left in the game. Adams and Smith each posted a layup to cut the lead to six before the game ended with the Cavaliers ahead, 91-85.

Inside the Boxscore 

  • Turnage led the Cardinals with a career-high 31 points, shooting 12-of-15 from the floor and 7-of-12 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
  • Adams added 14 points, shooting a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor. He added an assist and a steal as well to the effort.
  • Bozeman posted 11 points and one steal to go along with his game-high nine boards, which tied a season-high.
  • Davis, Smith and Gelhaus each contributed six points. Smith led the game with 10 assists, also adding three rebounds and two steals. Davis posted two rebounds, two steals and a block. Gelhaus added one rebound.
  • Saginaw Valley shot 55.0% (33-of-60) from the floor while Walsh shot 53.3% (32-of-60).
  • The Cardinals got 27 points from the bench compared to Walsh's two.

Meijer "Player of the Game

Turnage was named the Meijer "Player of the Game" for SVSU after his career-high of 31 points, adding five boards, two assists and a pair of steals.
