DETROIT – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team finished the season with an 85-76 loss at Wayne State on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals (13-15, 7-13 GLIAC) missed their first 11 shots from the floor and couldn't battle back from the deficit created through the first 10 minutes of play.

The Warriors (13-13, 10-10 GLIAC) scored the first six points of the game on the way to building a 23-3 lead with 9:26 remaining before halftime.

Kevonne Taylor (Detroit, Mich. / Chandler Park HS) made the first jump shot for SVSU at the 9:13 mark and sparked a 6-0 run for the Cardinals. Taylor finished the game with his second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. It is his fourth such performance this season, and the fifth of his career.

SVSU scored points in small bunches, but Wayne State answered each time and held onto a 48-26 lead as the teams entered the locker room at the break.

Javontae Ross (Flint, Mich. / Flint Powers HS) made a layup with just under 12 minutes left in regulation that ignited a 7-0 run for the Cardinals, and the lead was down to just 13 points (66-53) with 10:52 on the clock.

SVSU scored the final eight points of the game to trim the lead to single digits, but ran out of time before they could complete the comeback effort.

Three other Cardinal players joined Taylor with double-digit points. Triston Nichols (Shelby Twp., Mich. / De La Salle HS) had a team-high 16 points in the contest. Nichols finished 6-of-9 from the floor and added four rebounds, two assists, and a block to his stat line.
