LEXINGTON, Ky. – Saginaw Valley State University men's golf hosted the SVSU Spring Invitational at Kearney Hill Golf Links over the weekend. The Cardinals played three rounds across two days, with the A team finishing fifth out of 14 teams with a total of 897 (+33). The first two rounds featured warmer and calmer conditions before wind gusts of more than 40 miles per hour arrived on Sunday.
Evan Klein led the Cardinals, tying for sixth place out of 76 golfers. He finished with a total of 220 (+4) after rounds of 80 (+8), a team-best 68 (-4), and 72 (E). Klein led the field on par fours, shooting even overall, and tied for the fifth-most birdies in the tournament.
Tony Spicuzza followed with a tie for 12th place with a three-round total of 221 (+5). He carded rounds of 73 (+1), 69 (-3), and 79 (+7), joining Klein in leading the Cardinals during a two-under second round. Spicuzza was one of eight golfers to record an eagle, accomplishing the feat on the par-five third hole. He also tied for first in the field on par fives, finishing six under with an average of 4.50 strokes per hole, and tied for the fewest bogeys with seven over the 54 holes.
Dominik Dostal and Garrett Morrison followed with totals of 231 (+15) and 232 (+16), respectively. Dostal shot rounds of 76 (+4), 75 (+3), and 80 (+8), while Morrison recorded rounds of 75 (+3), 74 (+2), and 83 (+11). Jorge Basterra rounded out the A team lineup with rounds of 76 (+4), 80 (+8), and 80 (+8) to finish with a total of 236 (+20).
The B team consisted of AJ Liguori, Ben Yono, Garrett Forgash, and Alex McCarthy, with Liguori, Yono, and Forgash finishing within three strokes of one another.
Liguori finished with a total of 241 (+25) after rounds of 86 (+14), 73 (+1), and 82 (+10). Yono recorded back-to-back rounds of 82 (+10) on Saturday before finishing with a 78 (+6) for a total of 242 (+26). Forgash posted his first under-par round of the weekend with a 71 (-1) between rounds of 87 (+15) and 86 (+14) to finish with a total of 244 (+28).
McCarthy rounded out the Cardinals with a total of 254 (+38) after rounds of 85 (+13), 83 (+11), and 86 (+14).
As a team, SVSU tied for fifth in birdies with 34, ranked third in pars with 164, and recorded the fewest bogeys in the field with 52. The Cardinals found their greatest success on par fours and par fives, finishing 36 over on par fours and five under on par fives, ranking fourth and fifth in those categories.
Up Next: Saginaw Valley men's golf has a week off before returning to Kentucky on Monday, March 23 and Tuesday, March 24 for the Findlay Spring Invitational. The tournament will be held at Boones Trace Golf Course in Richmond, Kentucky.
