Myers and Walega Claim NSCAA All-Region Honors

KANSAS CITY, Kan. - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team landed two players on the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest All-Region team which was released Monday (Dec. 12). Zach Myers (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Eastern HS), a junior defender was selected to the second team and Zach Walega (Saline, Mich./Saline HS), a sophomore forward was honored with third team recognition for the Cardinals.

Myers, the GLIAC "Defensive Player of the Year" and First Team All-GLIAC selection, started all 19 matches in his third season with the SVSU men's soccer program. Myers and the rest of the defense allowed just 18 goals in 19 games, leading the Cardinal men's soccer program to their first GLIAC Men's Soccer Championship and NCAA postseason appearance in school history. Myers tallied two goals and two assists this season on 18 shots.

Walega tied for the team lead with 17 points and seven goals scored in 19 games this season. Walega netted three game winners this season and assisted on three goals for the Cardinals.

"I thought we had a few more players that were deserving to be on the All-Region Team, but it is extremely difficult in this region to get on that list. I am happy for both Zach Myers and Zach Walega for getting the recognition, they are two extremely hard workers and exemplify what SVSU Soccer is all about. It is exciting to know that both players will be returning in the fall," commented head soccer coach Cale Wassermann.

The Cardinals finished the season with a 12-5-3 record and ranked No. 22 in the final NSCAA Poll.
