NORTH CANTON, Ohio - The nationally second-ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team finished a weekend sweep through the city of Canton after a 3-0 victory over the Malone University Pioneers on Sunday afternoon (9/21). The victory comes on the heels of the team's 4-3 overtime decision over Walsh University on Friday.
The GLIAC win puts the Cardinals' record at 5-0-1 overall in 2014 and 2-0-1 in league play. Malone falls to 1-4-0 overall and 0-3-0 in the conference. It marks the best start in school history through six matches for the 2014 squad.
Saginaw Valley got things going at the 21:48 mark, as Aleksandar Isaevski notched his first-career goal off a feed from Laurence Paterson to make the score 1-0.
That's where the score stood after the first 45 minutes of play, as there was a bunch of action in the match with the Cards getting-off nine shots and the Pioneers seven in the first half.
Zach Vasold extended the lead to 2-0 10 minutes into the second half when he scored off a Jordan Kalk pass through the defense. It was Vasold's first goal of his senior campaign.
Just 10 minutes later, at the 65:30 marker, Jordan Kalk scored his second goal of 2014 on a breakaway to make the score 3-0.
"I am proud of the guys today on a total team effort," said Head Coach Cale Wassermann. "We scored some great goals, controlled possession and improved a lot defensively to earn a GLIAC shutout on the road, which is never easy."
"I was extremely happy to see Alex Isaevski (defender) get his first collegiate goal and for Zach Vasold, who is known for his midfield defending, to get the goal that put the game away!"
The SVSU defense put up another clean sheet, as goalkeeper Alexandre Bouillennec recorded his fifth shoutout of the season while upping his record to 5-0-1 overall.
The Cardinals continue GLIAC play with another weekend trip to Ohio, as they play Tiffin on Friday in a 4:30 pm match and Findlay on Sunday for a 3:00 pm contest.
