FINDLAY, Ohio – The nationally second-ranked Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team defeated the University of Findlay Oilers on the road Sunday afternoon (9/28) by a final score of 1-0.
The lone goal of the game was scored early on when the Cardinals found the back of the net at the 8:20 mark of the first half. Senior midfielder Craig Neal scored his fourth goal of the season when he was able to knock one into the right side past the Findlay goalkeeper. It was Neal's second game-winner of the weekend and eighth of his career, as he tallied the double-overtime goal against Tiffin on Friday (9/26) afternoon.
The SVSU defense was stellar all match again, as the Oilers were only able to manage 10 shots.
Freshman goalkeeper Alexandre Bouillennec was dominant again between the posts for the Cardinals as he recorded his sixth shutout of the season. Bouillennec is now unbeaten in his first eight games to begin his collegiate career, as he stopped all four shots on goal he faced on the afternoon.
"It's a great feeling to get on the bus after two big road wins, and both games this weekend were extremely tough," said SVSU Head Coach Cale Wassermann. "Findlay is one of the toughest places to play in the Midwest; their field presents some challenges and they are a team that works extremely hard. To get out of there with all three points is a great way to end the weekend. Getting another clean sheet (6 in 8 games) is something we take a lot of pride in and Craig Neal proved again today that he is one of the most dangerous clutch players in the country, scoring his 8th career game-winning goal."
SVSU improves its record to 7-0-1 overall and 4-0-1 in the GLIAC after today's victory, as it continues the best start in school history. The Cardinals are a very impressive 5-0 away from Braddock Field this year. Findlay falls to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in GLIAC play.
Saginaw Valley will return to the friendly confines of Braddock Field this weekend when it hosts a pair of GLIAC opponents. The Cardinals will take on the Ohio Dominican Panthers on Friday (10/3) at 3:30 pm before hosting the Lake Erie Storm on Sunday (10/5) at 2:30 pm.
