MIDLAND - The Saginaw Valley State University men's soccer team fell to the Northwood University Timberwolves on Friday afternoon (10/31) by a score of 2-1 in overtime at Dean Field on the campus of Northwood University.
It was the second meeting between the teams in 2014, as SVSU and Northwood played to a 0-0 draw earlier in the season on September 12th at SVSU's Braddock Field.
The Cardinals and Timberwolves both struggled to get any offense going in the first half on a cold and windy day. The teams combined for nine shots with five of them coming on goal in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper Alexandre Bouillennec made four saves in the period to keep the game scoreless heading into the halftime break.
Northwood would get on the board first at the 51:25 mark in the second half when Mike Ankoviak scored off a corner kick by Keaton Levock to take a 1-0 lead.
SVSU could not manage to get anything past the Northwood goalkeeper until the 87:20 mark in the second half. That's when a foul on the Timberwolves gave the Cardinals a penalty kick. Junior Tyler Channell stepped up and drilled it to the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1. The game would then head into overtime.
Craig Neal began the overtime with a pair of shots on goal but was turned away each time. The T-Wolves capitalized on a foul by SVSU and scored the game-winner on a free kick at the 94:31 mark in the first overtime.
Bouillennec took the loss for the Cardinals in net as he recorded seven saves in the game.
Saginaw Valley concluded the regular season with a record of 12-3-2 and 9-3-2 in the GLIAC while Northwood finished with a 12-3-1 overall record and a 10-3-1 mark in the conference.
The Cardinals will travel to Tiffin, Ohio next weekend for the 2014 GLIAC Men's Soccer Tournament. SVSU will be the #3 or #4 seed and face either Northwood or Tiffin in the semifinals on Friday, November 7th. The final seeding will depend on the outcome of the Lake Erie and Ohio Dominican match tonight.
