KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University softball team concluded its annual trip to the Rebel Spring Games in Kissimmee, Fla. with two wins to push their 2010 record to 11-2, with an 8-2 win over Lynn University and a 9-1 win over Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals were slated to play a total of 17 games in Florida this season, but lost four games due to heavy rain during the week.
GAME ONE
Saginaw Valley would strike first against Lynn University when Jillian Peterson (Freeland, Mich.) laced a
two-out double to left-center scoring Angela
Kaiser (Waterford, Mich./Our Lady of the Lakes HS) to give
Cardinals’ starter Jade
Fulton (Byron, Mich.) an early 1-0 lead.
Lynn would tie the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the third inning, capitalizing on an SVSU error earlier in the inning.
The Cardinals would strike it rich in the top of the fifth when Kaiser laced a grand slam to right-center field scoring pinch runner Allison Jaskulka (Madison Heights, Mich./Lamphere HS), Lauren Memmer (White Lake, Mich./Lakeland HS) and Shannon McLaughlin (Benton Harbor, Mich./Watervliet HS) to put SVSU up 5-1.
Nicole Bigelow (Grandville, Mich.) would get a two out rally started in the top of the sixth, driving in Kim Sills (Clinton Twp./Chippewa Valley HS) on a single of the pitchers leg and would later score on a throwing error by the Lynn catcher.
Fulton got her fifth win of the season for the Cardinals throwing five and a third innings allowing seven hits and an earned run, while striking out five on the windy afternoon.
GAME TWO
Saginaw Valley would jump all over Wheeling Jesuit in the bottom
of the third inning scoring five runs, three of which came off the
bat of Kalie Burdick’s (Milford, Mich.) three-run homer
to deep left field.
SVSU would add three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the lead to 8-0, the big hit of the inning came on a line drive down the left field line by Peterson that scored Dana Velzy (Farmington, Mich./Farmington HS).
The Cardinals would put Wheeling Jesuit away in the bottom of the sixth when Jenna Holmes (Jenison, Mich.) laced a single through the left side that scored Ashley Coffin (Sterling Heights, Mich./Stevenson HS) to give the Cardinals the up eight mercy victory.
The Cardinals will return to action when they travel to Concordia (Mich.) on March 20.
