SANDUSKY, Ohio -- The SVSU Softball team split on Saturday at the 2019 GLIAC Tournament, defeating Purdue Northwest 3-0 in game one before falling to Northwood by a 10-2 score in five innings of the second game. The second game defeat ended the postseason run for the Cardinals, as the games were in the elimination bracket.
Game 1 - PNW (W, 3-0)
The Cardinals then added two more in the home half of the 5th inning, as Aubree Mouthaan drilled a two-RBI double down the left field line to push the score to 3-0.
That was all of the run support that freshman hurler Jaclyn Groves would need, as she moved to 6-3 for the year with a complete game, two-hit victory. She struck-out five batters and walked four in the win.
Mouthaan had a hit and two RBI whlie Moyler had a triple that rattled off the fence in left center field. She scored a run and walked once as well. Sarah Gersch had a hit and run, Jackie Popko ripped a double and Alicia Kolacki added a hit. Salisbury had the other RBI for the Cardinals while Gersch and Alexis Cerven each stole a base.
Game 2 - Northwood (L, 10-2)
The Timberwolves jumped out front in a big way in the bottom of the 1st, going for seven runs on six hits to take a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the 4th, Saginaw Valley scored its only two runs of the game. Popko drilled a solo shot to center field and Salisbury knocked-in Mouthaan on a grounder to shortstop. That made the score 7-2 in Northwood's favor.
Three more came NU's way in the 5th inning, ending the game as the Timberwolves' lead reached eight runs at 10-2.
Groves (6-4) got the start and was handed the loss in the second game, pitching just 0.1 innings and allowing five runs on three hits with a pair of walks.
The Cardinals finish their 2019 season with a 28-24 overall record and will graduate five seniors. Mouthaan, Corbett, Hannah Atwell, Elayne Young and Alexis Cerven all leave the program after their playing careers at SVSU.
