Cardinals Fall in Thriller to Rival Grand Valley

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State women’s basketball team lost a tough match to GLIAC rival Grand Valley State University tonight (Jan. 8), 73-65.

The Cardinals came out in the first half with a lot of energy, and took a 10 point lead into the locker room. In the first stanza, Saginaw Valley State’s sophomore guard Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio) led the Cardinals with a dozen points, and senior point guard Tricia Everett (Saginaw, Mich.) drained 11 of her team-high 19 points to give SVSU the double-digit lead as time expired.

In the second half, the Cardinals shot 37.5 percent from the floor, while the defense forced nine turnovers. The Lakers, however, managed to put 44 points on the scoreboard in the second half behind freshman guard Jasmine Padin’s game-high 24 points.

The loss drops the Cardinals’ record to 1-11 overall and 0-7 in the GLIAC, while Grand Valley improves to 9-2 and 5-1 in the GLIAC. SVSU will return to action at 1 p.m. Saturday (Jan. 10) as Ferris State comes to "Cardinal Country" for conference action.
