ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Grand Valley State University Thursday (Jan. 7), 82-58 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division match-up.
The Cardinals trailed the Lakers by as many as 15 points in the first half, but cut the lead to only eight entering the locker room. Freshman Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich. / Powers HS) led Saginaw Valley in the first half, scoring 11 points and grabbing nine of the team's 18 rebounds.
Grand Valley went on a ten point run within the first four minutes of the second half, and the Cardinals were unable to recover from the deficit as the Lakers went on to clinch the victory, 82-58.
Cardinal freshman Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich. / Renaissance HS) ended the game with 12 points, two assists and two steals while junior Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich. / Walled Lake Central HS) finished with 12 points and three rebounds. Herzog ended the evening with a double-double, recording 11 points and 11 rebounds and blocking five Laker shots.
With the loss, Saginaw Valley falls to 4-7 overall on the season, with a 2-4 mark in the GLIAC, while Grand Valley improves to 8-3 overall on the season and 5-1 in the GLIAC. The Cardinals return to action on Saturday (Jan. 9), when they travel to Big Rapids to take on Ferris State University. Tip off is scheduled for 3:00pm.
