MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women’s basketball team traveled to Northwood University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest today (Jan. 16). The Cardinals fell by a score of 77-68 bringing their overall record to 4-11 on the season and 2-8 in the GLIAC while Northwood moves to 7-7 overall, 3-7 in the GLIAC.
The first half of action was a back-and-forth battle as the Cardinals led by as much as eight points as freshman Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich. / Powers Catholic) knocked down a pair of free throws at the 15:28 mark. Freshman Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS) led the Cardinals with ten points and pulled down three rebounds in the first half while junior Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) added nine points. Northwood entered the locker room with a four point advantage; however Saginaw Valley could not find a way to re-gain the lead, as the Timberwolves took the victory, 77-68. Freshman Jasmine Woods (Lansing, Mich./Holt HS) led the way for Saginaw Valley in the second half by scoring all ten of her points for the night.
The Cardinals were led overall by Kennedy, who ended the game
with 14 points and pulled down five rebounds while Wesp finished
with 12 points and five rebounds. Junior Brittany
Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS)
posted ten points and seven rebounds.
Saginaw Valley returns to action on Thursday (Jan. 21) when they host Michigan Tech in a GLIAC match-up. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
