Lady Cardinals Fall at Home To Wayne State, 73-62

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team lost a 73-62 contest to the visiting Wayne State University Warriors Thursday night (Feb. 4) in a match-up of GLIAC teams with identical records.  The loss versus Wayne State drops the Lady Cardinals to 4-16 overall on the season and 2-13 in the GLIAC, while the Warriors improve to 5-15 overall, holding a 3-12 record in the conference after the win.

Wayne State held a 14-point advantage heading into halftime, with the score 42-28 in the Warriors' advantage.  SVSU would out-score Wayne State in the second half, 34-31, but were unable to cut into the Warrior lead quite enough.

Leading SVSU offensively in the contest were freshman forward Jasmine Kennedy (Harper Woods, Mich./Grosse Pointe North HS), junior forward Brittany Burkhardt (West Bloomfield, Mich./Walled Lake Central HS) and sophomore guard Marah Kyle (Bluffton, Ind.), who all scored nine points.  Freshman center Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) had eight points, a game-high seven rebounds and three blocks.  Herzog now has 64 blocks on the year, just seven shy of breaking the school record of 70, set by Jennifer Hagstrom in the 2003-04 season.  Junior guard Kelley Wesp (Cincinnati, Ohio/Glen Este HS) also had eight points for the Lady Cardinals.

SVSU returns to action Saturday (Feb. 6), as it hosts Northwood University in rivalry match-up.  The Timberwolves will enter the contest with a 10-9 overall record and 6-9 record in GLIAC contests.
