Second Half Surge Not Enough as Cardinals Fall to Warriors

DETROIT, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team fell to Wayne State University tonight (Dec. 8), 59-52. The Cardinals drop to 2-5 overall and 1-1 in the GLIAC with the loss, while the Warriors improve to 5-2 on the season and 1-2 in the conference.

SVSU was led by Meijer "Player of the Game" Grace Herzog (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) who scored 10 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field and six rebounds.

The Cardinals would jump out to a quick start, taking an 8-4 lead on a Herzog jumper.  The Warriors would then answer with a 16-0 run and take a 32-18 lead into the intermission.

Saginaw Valley would go on a 16-2 run early in the second half, tying the game at 34-34 with 13:36 to play.  The Cardinals would take their first lead of the second half at 38-36 when Kayla Womack (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich./North HS) knocked down a jump shot with 11:27 remaining. Womack finished the night with eight points and six rebounds.

The SVSU lead would increase to 42-37 after an Aysha Boston (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance HS) bucket with 9:37 to go in regulation. Boston finished the evening with seven points and five assists.

The Warriors would rally once again, this time with a 12-1 run, to take a six point lead with 4:52 left in the game. The Cardinals found themselves down by three with one minute remaining, but would be unable to close the gap, falling to the Warriors 59-52.

Samantha Zirzow (Goodrich, Mich.) tallied seven points and nine rebounds, while Kristen Greene (Brown City, Mich.) dropped in six points and grabbed six boards. Cheritee Green (Wyoming Park, Mich.) added seven points and six rebounds in the contest.

SVSU's comeback attempt was sparked by 41 percent shooting from the floor in the second half, compared to just 32 percent for Wayne State.

Saginaw Valley will attempt to bounce back when they travel to Findlay to battle the Oilers on Saturday (Dec. 10) at 1:00 PM.
