PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball team bounced back from its first conference loss of the season on Monday with a commanding 28 point victory over Lake Erie College (5-5, 0-4 GLIAC) on Wednesday night (Dec. 18). The victory improves the Lady Cardinals to 5-2 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC.
SVSU started the game with a 7-0 run that was capped-off by a jumper from junior forward Samantha Zirzow. The Cards continued to lead and built an advantage of 16 points, their largest of the first half, when senior guard Kristen Greene hit a jumper with 50 seconds left to make the score 42-26.
The Storm struck on a layup with 10 seconds remaining in the first frame to make the score 42-28, and that's what the scoreboard would read heading into the halftime break.
Greene was hot in the opening 20 minutes of play, making good on 9-of-12 shots and adding two free throws for 20 first half points. Sophomore guard Katelyn Carriere scored 12 points and added eight rebounds.
Leading 50-36 at the 14:54 marker in the second half, Saginaw Valley notched 12 consecutive points to extend the lead out to 62-36 with 11:17 left in the game.
SVSU extended its second half lead out to 30 points twice from that point, the first coming after a three-pointer from sophomore guard Mikayla Silm made the score 81-51 and the latter when junior forward Shelby Herrington drained a pair of free throws with just over a minute left and the score 83-53.
Lake Erie made two free throws to cut the lead to 83-55, and that's what the final score would be as the Cards closed-out with the 28 point victory.
Greene had a game-high 27 points and seven rebounds and was named the Meijer "Player of the Game." The 27 is four off of her career-high of 31, which she recorded December 30th of last year at Armstrong.
Carriere had her first career double-double with 12 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. She had another game-high with four assists.
Freshman forward Grace Whelan had 10 points in the game, which marks a high for her young career in an SVSU uniform.
Saginaw Valley shot 50.9% from the floor and held the Storm to just 29.2% shooting. The Cards were 21-of-26 from the free throw line (80.8%) and out-rebounded Lake Erie by a 46-34 margin.
The Lady Cardinals are back in action on Sunday (Dec. 22), as they host non-conference opponent Davenport University in a 2:00 pm contest.
