BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University Head Women's Basketball Coach Jamie Pewinski has been voted as the 2013-14 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Coach of the Year' after voting by the league's head coaches for the annual all-conference awards. Senior guards Kristen Greene and Kayla Womack were also recognized in their final seasons, as both were selected to the All-GLIAC Second Team.
In her third season at the helm for the SVSU women, Pewinski has led a turnaround that resulted in back-to-back appearances in the GLIAC Tournament for the first time since the 1997-98 and 98-99 seasons, when Pewinski herself was a member of the Lady Cardinal basketball squad. The 14 victories for SVSU in 2013-14 is the most for the program since the 2003-04 season and the 12 league victories is the most since the 98-99 squad posted 14 victories. Under Pewinski's direction this season, the team broke school records for three-point field goal percentage (39.1%) and free throw percentage (77.1%) while senior guard Kristen Greene set a new mark for single-season free throw percentage with 89.2%. The Lady Cardinals led the league with the 39.1% three-point percentage and was second with the 77.1% free throw percentage.
Greene had a sensational senior season, as the 5-8 guard averaged career-highs of 15.8 ppg, 6.6 rpg and 2.6 apg. She broke the SVSU single-season record for free throw percentage with a mark of 89.2% and surpasses the 1,000-point club for her career in the team's game at Northern Michigan University on February 13th. Greene became the all-time leader in three-point attempts (424) and sits third in career three-pointers made with 147.
Womack was second on the team in scoring, averaging a career-best 15.6 ppg. She recorded a 47.2% field goal percentage and averaged just under four rebounds per game. Kayla finished with 937 career points in her four years in an SVSU uniform.
