Cardinals Suffer Setback at Parkside
KENOSHA, WIS. — The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team fell 3-1 at Parkside on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (3-3-1, 1-2-0 GLIAC) scored in the first 15 minutes, but after taking the early lead, they allowed three straight goals—one in the first half and two in the second—as the Rangers (2-3-2, 2-0-1 GLIAC) secured the win at Wood Road Field in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

Emily Kolodin (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Eastern Michigan) put SVSU ahead early, netting her second goal of the season in the 15th minute. After Brie Clasen (Naperville, Ill. / Nequa Valley HS) beat a defender and took a low right shot, which Parkside keeper Tristen Cross saved, Kolodin put away the rebound for the game's first goal.

Leading the SVSU offense, Kolodin placed both of her shots on frame. Clasen complemented the attack, tallying one shot on goal as well as an assist.

Parkside quickly responded in the 21st minute, as a shot from Emily Mikkelson deflected off SVSU keeper Lainey Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS) and into the net, evening the score at 1-1.

Later in the half, Garbarz (3-3-1) made a save in the 32nd minute to preserve the tie going into halftime.

Through the first 45 minutes, both teams played evenly. The Cardinals outshot Parkside 9-7, with each keeper making two saves and both squads earning two first-half corner kicks.

Shortly after halftime, Kolodin had another scoring chance in the 47th minute but was stopped by Cross.

The game remained tight until the 74th minute, when the Rangers broke the tie with a goal from Carley Nolte, then added another in the final minute to secure the win.

Lauryn Fracassi (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville HS) and Ruby Grundner (Belle River, Ontario / Tecumseh Vista Academy) each recorded shots on target for SVSU. Garbarz finished the game with four saves in her 90 minutes of play.

UP NEXT: The Cardinals remain on the road with a trip to Houghton on Friday, October 3, to face Michigan Tech at 7:00 p.m. ET to begin a trip to the Upper Peninsula.
