Cardinals Extend Winning Streak to Three with 4-0 Win Over Northern Michigan
UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team defeated Northern Michigan 4-0 on Braddock Field on Friday afternoon. The Cardinals (7-3-2, 5-2-1 GLIAC) extend their winning streak to three-straight with the victory over the Wildcats (3-5-4, 3-4-1 GLIAC).
 
Abby Ellis (Waterford, Mich. / Waterford Mott HS) broke the scoreless deadlock in the 29th minute of play. Ellis headed the ball forward and beat NMU keeper Jillian Thompson with a soft lob that hopped into the net and put SVSU ahead 1-0 in the first half.
 
The Cardinals dictated the pace through the first 45 minutes, outshooting the Wildcats 9-3, with four shots on goal. Lainey Garbarz (W, 6-3-2) (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS) was challenged once in the game in the first half and made the save to secure her second clean sheet of the season. Thompson faced four shots and saved three of those opportunities.
 
Lauryn Fracassi (Grandville, Mich. / Grandville HS) increased the lead in the 51st minute. After her initial shot was saved, she collected the rebound and sent the ball into the net, making the score 2-0 just over five minutes into the second half.
 
Fracassi assisted in the next Cardinal goal as she crossed the ball into the box to Kaley Douglass (Williamston, Mich. / Williamston HS), who one-touched it to Madi Bajis (Macomb, Mich. / Utica HS) for the score, and SVSU led 3-0 in the 57th minute.
 
Rileigh Garbarz (Pinckney, Mich. / Father Gabriel Richard HS) recorded her third goal of the season in the 63rd minute. She connected with a header after receiving a cross from Maddie White (Bay City, Mich. / Garber HS), sending the ball into the net for her second consecutive game with a goal.
 
Fracassi finished the game with three points after scoring the insurance goal and assisting on the third score. She totaled a team-high three shots on goal.
 
Ellis finished with a goal and three shots, two on target, for the Cardinals. Bajis scored on her lone shot on goal. R. Garbarz scored on her only shot on goal. Kylie Cesarek (Macomb, Mich. / Dakota HS) finished with one shot on goal, while Emily Kolodin (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Eastern Michigan University) recorded two.
