Cardinal Tennis Ends Day With Split

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Saginaw Valley State University women’s tennis team split their competition yesterday (March 9), sweeping Northern State University by a score of 9-0 and falling to #22 Florida Tech, 9-0.

In the singles victory over Northern State University, sophomore Debra Hammond (Goodrich, Mich.) and junior Courtney Heileman (East China, Mich. / St. Clair HS) defeated both their opponents by scores of 6-1, 6-1.  Freshman Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) defeated Jamie Golden (Northern State) 6-4, 6-4 while senior Jessica Stone (Flushing, Mich.) beat Bridget Henderson (Northern State) 6-2, 6-4.  Freshmen Lindy Coon (Adrian, Mich.) and Theresa Frederick (Bay City, Mich. / Bay City Western HS) took down their opponents with scores of 6-1, 6-0.

The Cardinals also swept Northern State in the doubles competition, as Shangguan and Hammond, Coon and freshman Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich. / Garber HS) defeated their opponents 8-3 in number one and two doubles, respectively. The duo of Heileman and Stone beat their Northern State doubles competitors, 8-2.

Saginaw Valley was defeated by #22 Florida Tech, 9-0.  Jessica Stone was the only Cardinal to take the singles competition to three rounds, but was defeated by scores of 3-6, 6-0 and 10-1.  The team of Shangguan and Hammond fell to their opponents, 8-2 while duos Heileman/Stone and Piorkowski/Coon both fell 8-0 in the doubles competition.

With the split, the Cardinals move to 3-9 overall on the season.  Saginaw Valley women’s tennis will return to action Wednesday (Mar. 10) as they take on Indianapolis and Wesleyan (Conn.) in Orlando at 6:30 pm.
