UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team gained their first victory today (Sept. 7), defeating Tiffin University 6-3 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Cardinals were strong in the doubles competition as team Stephanie Bagnell (Brookside, Nova-Scotia/Cobequid Educational Center) and Hailey Crampton (Vernan, British Columbia/WL Seaton) defeated their opponents 9-8, 7-4. Crampton would add another victory in singles, defeating Tiffin 6-1, 6-2.
Duo Cortney Heileman (East China, Mich. / St. Clair HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) defeated their Tiffin opponents 8-3, as Heileman would go on to win in singles, 6-1 and 6-2. Wong was victorious as well, defeating her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) was successful in singles, winning with scores of 6-2 and 6-3.
With the win, the Cardinals move to 1-1 overall on the season and 1-1 in the GLIAC while Tiffin falls to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in the GLIAC. The Cardinal tennis team will return to action this week (Sept. 10) as they host Northwood University in a GLIAC match beginning at 2:00 pm.
