PAINESVILLE, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team defeated Lake Erie College today (Oct. 1), 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest.
Senior Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China / Shiyang HS) defeated Jordyn Parrigan in no. 1 singles, 6-0 and 6-0, while freshman Andrea Calhoun (Midland, Mich.) was successful in no. 2 singles defeating Emily Rose-Gray 6-0, and 6-0. Both freshman Stephanie Bagnell (Brookside, Nova-Scotia/Cobequid Educational Center) who played in no. 3 singles and freshman Hailey Crampton (Vernan, British Columbia/WL Seaton) who played in no. 4 singles defeated their Lake Erie opponents. Bagnell defeated Cassie Rideout 6-0, and 6-0 while Crampton defeated Stephanie Koval 6-1, and 6-0. Freshman Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) beat Lorin Koch in no. 5 singles with scores of 6-0, and 6-0 for the Cardinals. Sophomore Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) won her match in no. 6 singles by default for Saginaw Valley.
The Shangguan and Calhoun duo for Saginaw Valley defeated their Lake Erie opponents in no. 1 doubles with a score of 8-1, while Crampton and Bagnell defeated their opponent 8-0 in no. 2 doubles. Wong and Piokowski won no. 3 doubles by default.
With the win the Cardinals improve to 2-3 overall on the season, and 2-3 in the GLIAC, while Lake Erie falls to 0-9 overall on the season, and 0-8 in the GLIAC. Saginaw Valley will be back in action when they travel to Ashland University in a GLIAC match-up. The match is scheduled to start at 10:00 am.
