Cardinals Drop Season Opener to Bulldogs, 5-4

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell in their 2011 season opener today (Sept. 2), 5-4 in a tight match against the Ferris State University Bulldogs.

Freshman Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./ Dow HS) had a successful first day at the collegiate level, winning in no.1 doubles and no. 2 singles.  She defeated Tabitha Simpson in her singles match 7-6, 7-6 and teamed up with Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) for a 8-4 win over the team of Ana Jan and Melissa Flowers in doubles. 

The team of Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) also picked up a doubles win no. 3.  Wong would also be victorious in her no. 3 singles match, winning in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 6-1.

With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 0-1 overall on the season and 0-1 in the GLIAC, while the Bulldogs improve to 1-0 overall and 1-0 in GLIAC.  The Cardinals will return to action on September 9, when they make the short trip to Northwood University for a 2:00 PM match.
