HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Women's tennis team was victorious today (Oct. 7), defeating Michigan Tech by a score of 5-4 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (GLIAC) match. With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 2-6 overall and in the GLIAC, while Michigan Tech falls to 3-7 overall and in conference play.
The Cardinals got off to a great start in doubles play with the team of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) and Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) earning the first point of the match by defeating their opponent 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Saginaw Valley would go on to receive another point when Michigan Tech was forced to forfeit from No. 3 doubles.
Sophomore Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) would pick up another point for the Cardinals winning in No. 3 singles 6-1, 6-3. In No. 5 singles, sophomore Annessa Campian (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-4. Michigan Tech was also forced to forfeit in No. 6 singles giving the Cardinals their final point.
The Cardinals will return to action tomorrow (Oct. 8) to face the Lake Superior State Lakers at 11 am.
