Cardinals Fall to Lakers, 5-4

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. -- The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team fell today (Oct. 8) to Lake Superior State University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference match by a score of 5-4. The Cardinals drop to 2-7 on the season with the loss, while Lake Superior improves to 11-5 overall and 6-5 in the GLIAC.

Saginaw Valley jumped out to a fast start by winning all three doubles matches. Junior Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) and freshman Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) won their tightly-contested No. 1 doubles match 9-8 (8-6). The team of Annessa Campian (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) also won their No. 2 doubles match in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (7-2). The victorious doubles session was rounded out by the team of Bobbi Enos (Almont, Mich./Almont HS) and Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) winning their No. 3 doubles match by an 8-5 count.

Yunjiao Shangguan gave the Cardinals their first and only point in the singles matches, winning 6-2, 6-4 in No. 1 singles. Meghan Woody lost a hard-fought match in No. 2 singles, 6-3 and 6-4.

The Cardinals will return to action at home against Hillsdale on Thursday (Oct. 13) when they face the Huskies for a 2:00 pm match.
