TIFFIN, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University Women's Tennis team had a big win today (Oct. 14) defeating Tiffin University by a score of 8-1. With the win, the Cardinals qualify to compete in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Tournament taking place next weekend.
The team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/ Shiyang HS) and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich/ Dow HS) would get the Cardinals off to a good start winning their No. 1 doubles match 9-7. Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) and Annessa Campian (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) would keep the Cardinals going, winning at No. 2 doubles 9-8 while Bobbi Enos (Almont, Mich./ Almont HS) and Katie Piorkowski(Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) would also finish with a win in No. 3 doubles, 8-2.
The Cardinals would also fair well in a majority of the singles matches with Woody leading the way with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 2 singles. Right behind her would be Wong defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-1 in No. 3 singles and Bobbi Enos taking her No. 4 singles match with scores of 6-0, 6-1. Campian and Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich./Bay City Western HS) would also post wins for the Cardinals, notching their final two points of the afternoon.
With the win, Saginaw Valley improves to 4-7 overall and 4-7 in GLIAC. They will return to action next weekend when they compete in the GLIAC Tennis Tournament.
