ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team dropped a pair of matches to open their 2012 spring season. The Cardinals fell in their first match of the day to Southern Indiana by a score of 7-2, before falling to #36 Florida Tech in their afternoon match-up, 9-0.
Match 1
Saginaw Valley battled with Southern Indiana in their first match of the day, falling 7-2. The team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) claimed the Cardinals first point of the day with a doubles win over the team of Lindsey White and Ellena Stimpf, 8-3.
Shangguan also defeated White in straight sets by a tally of 6-1 at 1 Singles for the Cardinals final point of the match. Katie Piorkowski (Essexville, Mich./Garber HS) and Woody both managed to push their matches to three sets before each eventually fell.
Match 2
The Cardinals battled with #36 Florida Tech in their afternoon session, falling by a final of 9-0. The team of Bobbi Enos (Almont, Mich./Almont HS) and Piorkowski battled tough at 3 Doubles before falling to the team of Elizabeth Hensley and Monica Price by a score of 9-7.
In singles competition, Shangguan took to the court against the #13 player in the nation, Katarina Huba, falling in a hard fought match by a final score of 6-4, 6-2.
The Cardinals fall to 6-11 overall on the season and will return to the courts on Tuesday (Mar. 6) when they meet up with Presbytarian College.
