ORLANDO, Fla. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team notched its first win of the 2012 season with a thrilling 5-4 victory over Upper Iowa today (Mar. 7). The Cardinals improve to 7-12 overall on the season with the win.
The Cardinals recorded their first point of the afternoon at 2 Doubles with 8-6 win by the team of Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) and Annessa Campian (Troy, Mich./Troy HS) over the team of Vanderhoeven and Alba. The 1 Doubles team of Yunjiao Shangguan (Chengdu, China/Shiyang HS) and Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) pushed their match to 9-8 before falling in points to the team of Nunez and Loewecke.
SVSU would take three of the six singles matches from Upper Iowa in straight sets. Campian picked up her second point of the afternoon for the Cardinals with a 6-2, 6-2 win over Vanderhoeven at 5 Singles. Theresa Frederick (Saginaw, Mich./Bay City Western HS) finished off Smith, 6-3, 6-4 at 6 Singles before Woody picked up a straight sets win over Lowewecke 6-2, 6-3 at 2 Singles, That would set up a thrilling final point between Shangguan and Nunez. Shangguan would drop the first game 6-7 before battling for back-to-back wins of 7-6 to clinch the win.
Saginaw Valley will finish up their 2012 spring trip on Thursday (Mar. 8) with match against Christopher Newport (Va.) at 8:30 AM.
