MENTOR, Ohio - The Saginaw Valley State University women's tennis team posted a dominating win today (Sept. 15), defeating Lake Erie College 9-0 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Cardinals continued their impressive doubles play, with the No. 1 doubles team of Izabella Ismailova (Almaty, Kazkhstan/Military College of Sport) and Erin Doud (Northville, Mich./Northville HS) grabbing an 8-2 victory to start off the day. Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich./Dow HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island/Colonel Gray Senior High) were successful atNo. 2 doubles, shutting-out their Lake Erie opponents, 8-0.
Due to a shortage of players, Lake Erie was forced to forfeit their No. 3 doubles match, giving Ashley Giordano (Alpena, Mich./Alpena HS) and Laurene Majani (Lille, France/Hautes Etudes d'Ingenieur) the win.
Saginaw Valley carried their momentum into singles, where Doud won in No. 3 singles and Wong at No. 4 singles, holding their opponents scoreless, 6-0 6-0.
Also picking up their second wins on the day were Woody in No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-0) and Ismailova at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-0).
Ashley Giordano and Hannah Wittock (Flushing, Mich./Flushing HS) were victorious in No. 5 and No. 6 singles due to Lake Erie forfeit.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 2-4 on the season and in GLIAC while Lake Erie falls to 0-6 overall and in the conference.
Saginaw Valley will return to action Friday (Sept. 19) when it travels to Ferris State in a GLIAC match set to begin at 3:00 pm.
