UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State Univeristy women's tennis team was victorious today (Oct. 7), defeating the University of Findlay 5-4 in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match.
The Cardinals started-off in doubles play by the team of Meghan Woody (Midland, Mich. / Dow HS) and Charlotte Wong (Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island / Colonel Gray Senior High) picking up an 8-1 win at the No. 2 position.
Saginaw Valley played exceptionally well in singles play today, with Woody shutting-out her No. 2 singles opponent 6-0, 6-0. Erin Doud (Northville, Mich. / Northville HS) continued her winning streak with a 6-1, 6-2 victory in No. 3 singles.
Hannah Wittock (Flushing, Mich. / Flushing HS) bounced-back from a first set loss to grab a 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory in No. 6 singles.
Grabbing the fifth and deciding point for Saginaw Valley was senior Ashley Giordano (Alpena, Mich. / Alpena HS), who defeated her No. 5 singles opponent 6-4, 6-3.
With the win, the Cardinals improve to 3-9 overall and in the GLIAC while Findlay falls to 2-8 overall and in conference play.
Saginaw Valley will return to action Friday (Oct. 11), as they travel to Michigan Tech for a GLIAC match set to begin at noon.
