SAULT STE. MARIE - The Saginaw Valley State University tennis team made the most of its weekend trip to the Upper Peninsula, closing things out with a 7-2 victory on Saturday (9/20) to make it a GLIAC sweep following Friday's 6-3 win over Michigan Tech.
SVSU started the same as it did on Friday, carrying a 2-1 lead into singles play after fine doubles competition.
Against the Lakers, the #2 doubles tandem of Izabella Ismailova and Danielle Slonac posted an 8-3 victory while Shea Donahue and Lauren Sharp had a clean 8-0 sweep of Lake State in the #3 doubles slot.
Ismailova would come back from an early deficit and post a 6-7, 6-2, 6-2 victory at #1 singles, her first win in that spot for the year.
Meghan Woody kept things rolling for SV at #3 singles, as she disposed of her opponent by a 6-3, 6-1 mark.
Saginaw Valley would close-out strong as well with the remainder of the singles matches, as Donahue (6-2, 6-2), Abigail Shonk (6-0, 6-0) and Sharp (6-0, 6-0) were all victorious to seal the match and the 7-2 final.
"To win both of these matches on the road this weekend feels great," stated Head Coach Jenn Boehm. "Our team is getting better every match and is really focused on improving."
The team will look to carry the improved play and momentum into play this weekend, as the Cardinals travel to compete in the ITA Regionals from September 26-28. Grand Valley State University will play host to this year's regional event.
